September 10-11, 2008
Richmonde Hotel, Ortigas Center,
San Miguel Ave., Pasig City

Solid Waste has emerged as one of the most urgent and visible environmental priorities of urbanized areas, needing a concerted approach with the active participation of all sectors, including industry. Companies themselves are directly affected by the impact of waste on their operations and the increased costs of doing business. Appropriate solutions lie in taking a preventive approach and in integrating solid waste programs into their management systems.

This seminar is thus for those interested in learning how to prevent and better manage solid waste in their offices, plant facilities or work areas, through a discussion of key concepts, solid waste legislation and appropriate tools as follows:

  • The Solid Waste Situation in Metro Manila/Philippines:
    • Sources, Characteristics, Waste stream, Impact, Responses

  • Republic Act 9003: The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act - Key provisions and implications

  • ESWM Concepts and Principles:
    • Waste Management Hierarchy; Waste Minimization / Source Reduction

  • Business Areas for Solid Waste Reduction: Administration, Marketing, Purchasing, Production, Packaging and Transport

  • Overview of Solid Waste Reduction Techniques
    • Product and Process Changes
    • Source Reduction
    • Recycling and Resource Recovery
    • Waste Exchange / Industrial uses for Wastes

  • Designing and Implementing Waste Management Programs

* Industry case examples will be used to complement the above topics, and to illustrate practical applications of SWM concepts.
